Workshop diikuti oleh puluhan anggota Karang Wreda Panjang Jiwo yang antusias mengikuti setiap sesi. Materi utama mengenai berbagai modus penipuan digital (digital scam) disampaikan oleh Mikhael Ming Khosasih, S.Kom., M.Kom., dosen Program Studi Informatika Universitas Surabaya.

UBAYA’s Center for Aging Wellness Hosts “CyberSafe Seniors” Workshop to Enhance Digital Security for Older Adults
The Center for Aging Wellness (CAW) at the University of Surabaya (Ubaya) organized the CyberSafe Seniors workshop in Kelurahan Panjang Jiwo, Surabaya, as part of an effort to improve digital security literacy among older adults. This activity builds on the results of a Training of Trainers (ToT) program that equipped students to serve as digital security facilitators for older adults. The initiative was made possible through a collaboration between the University of Surabaya and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The initial ToT phase was conducted in a hybrid format, featuring speakers from MAFINDO and USM and involving students from both universities. The subsequent workshops for older adults were held in person in both Surabaya and Penang. The event was officially opened by the Head of Kelurahan Panjang Jiwo, Mr. Anggoro Novianto, S.H., followed by remarks from the Head of the Karang Wreda (Older Adults Community Group) “Panji Sapto Utomo,” Mr. Sujarwo, and the Head of the Center for Aging Wellness, dr. Astrid Pratidina Susilo, Sp.An-TI, Ph.D.
Dozens of members of the Karang Wreda Panjang Jiwo group participated in the workshop, showing great enthusiasm throughout the sessions. The main session on various digital scam methods was delivered by Mr. Mikhael Ming Khosasih, S.Kom., M.Kom., a lecturer in the Informatics Study Program at the University of Surabaya. Participants were introduced to various forms of digital threats—such as phishing, WhatsApp-based scams, One-Time Password (OTP) misuse, and malicious links—and learned how to recognize the warning signs of scams that frequently target older adults.
Following the presentation, the activity continued with a Smartphone Security Clinic, where each participant received direct, hands-on assistance in checking and improving their mobile phone security settings. The assistance covered a range of practical measures, from activating security features and checking privacy settings to setting up two-step verification on WhatsApp and discussing safe practices for everyday digital device use.
During the clinic session, Dr. Indri Hapsari, an Industrial Engineering lecturer, and Philander Lawrence, an Industrial Engineering student, served as facilitators, providing one-on-one guidance to participants. A total of 15 student facilitators and five lecturer facilitators took part in the activity. By assigning one facilitator to a small group of participants, the facilitators were able to focus on guiding older adults through each step of the smartphone security configuration process according to their specific devices. This approach allowed participants to understand the concepts and to apply them immediately to the devices they use in their daily lives.
The involvement of Industrial Engineering lecturers and students is part of a service-learning initiative, through which students directly apply their communication, problem-solving, and community facilitation skills. Meanwhile, the lecturers provide supervision and help ensure the effectiveness of the assistance process. Through this activity, participants are expected to become more confident in using digital technology safely and to develop their ability to recognize and avoid various forms of digital fraud. At the same time, students gain real-world experience by serving as facilitators for the older adult community.
The CyberSafe Seniors workshop is part of Aging Wellness Talk #6, a flagship program of the Center for Aging Wellness at the University of Surabaya. The program aims to foster healthy aging by enhancing digital literacy and cybersecurity awareness among older adults. Looking ahead, the program is expected to expand to other older adult communities, contributing to the development of a society that is more resilient and secure in the face of the challenges of digital transformation.
